Venue: UCL, Department of History of Art, 21 Gordon Square, London WC1E 6BT, room 3/4

Dr Mervyn Heard provides some bizarre examples of imagery drawn from the age of the nineteenth century lantern lecture and magic lantern performance, encompassing diverse subjects from ghost-raising to pornography and the unfathomable.

This presentation employs a vintage dissolving view lantern, original Victorian hand-painted images and mechanical moving effects.

“Professor” Mervyn Heard has presented performances and projects all over Europe, in America, Australia and Japan. Venues have included Tate Britain, the Royal Opera House, The British Library, the Royal Pavilion in Brighton and National Film Museums in Turin and Lisbon. He is the author of Phantasmagoria: The Secret Life of the Magic Lantern.
