Matthias Flügge was born 1952 in Demmin/Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. 1970 he became skilled worker for technische Kohle and finished his Abitur (A levels). 1972-1976 studied Kunstwissenschaft at Humboldt-University, Berlin, with Peter H. Feist and Harald Olbrich. 1978 to 1986 editor for the magazine Bildende Kunst. 1990 editor-in-chief of bildende kunst. 1991 re-founding as neue bildnede kunst. Until 1999 editor-in-chief and co-editor. 2000 to 2012 freelanced publicist and curator in Berlin. 1995 member of Akademie der Künste, Berlin, 1997-2006 vice president (im Wahlamt). Since October 2012 Head of Academy of Fine Arts, Dresden.
